Cameroon's health system: structure, strengths and pressure points
· JV Healthcare Advisory
A pyramid of district, regional and central facilities, with financing and workforce distribution as the main constraints.
Cameroon's health system is organised as a pyramid: health centres and district hospitals at the base, regional hospitals in the middle, and central and general hospitals at the top.
Public, faith-based and private providers operate side by side, and faith-based facilities carry a substantial share of rural service delivery.
The dominant financing challenge is out-of-pocket payment. Progress towards universal health coverage aims to shift this, but coverage remains uneven in practice.
Workforce distribution is a second pressure point: specialists concentrate in Yaoundé and Douala, leaving specialist consultation scarce in much of the country.
This is where structured teleconsultation and diaspora clinical partnerships can help — not by replacing local services, but by extending specialist input to where it is otherwise unavailable.
