Healthcare choices for cross-border workers between France and Switzerland
· JV Healthcare Advisory
Frontalier workers choose between Swiss basic insurance and the French system, and the choice has lasting effects.
Workers living in France and employed in Switzerland face a formal choice of health cover, commonly known as the right of option.
One route is Swiss basic insurance, which gives access to care in Switzerland under the usual Swiss rules. The other is affiliation to the French system through the relevant national scheme.
The decision affects premiums, where care can be delivered, family cover and the treatment of dependants, and it is generally exercised once.
Practical considerations often outweigh the arithmetic: where your family lives, where your children attend school, language of care and the location of existing specialists.
Whatever the choice, keep documentation of your affiliation available. Most difficulties arise at the point of billing, not at the point of care.
