Responsible use of AI in healthcare organisations

· Dennis Angafor

Where AI can genuinely help administration and education, and where clinical judgement must remain human.

Artificial intelligence is already useful in healthcare, but rarely in the places the marketing suggests. Its dependable value today is administrative: drafting letters, structuring notes, summarising documents and triaging inboxes.

These uses share a property: a human reviews the output before it affects anyone. That review is the safeguard, and removing it is what turns a helpful tool into a clinical risk.

Data protection comes first. Under Swiss and EU rules, patient data must not be sent to systems without a lawful basis, a processing agreement and a clear understanding of where the data is stored.

Evaluate tools on the boring criteria: auditability, error behaviour, data residency, exit options and cost at scale. Impressive demonstrations tell you little about behaviour at the edges.

Used with discipline, AI returns time to clinicians. Used carelessly, it manufactures confident errors at speed. The difference is governance, not technology.
